SAVING FACE
Homemade face masks are perfect for a home spa day. Again, all you need is the stuff you already have in your pantry and fridge. These are affordable and, best of all, you know what is going into them because you're making them yourself.
HYDRATING FACE MASK
You'll need:
- 1/2 avocado (use 3 tablespoons of milk if you don't have any avocado)
- 1 tablespoon of honey
- a handful of oats
Mash the avocado, add the honey and sprinkle in the oats.
The oats calm and nourish the skin, while the avocado contains moisture restoring oils. The honey is a humectant, and what that means is that it's super moisturising, but doesn't leave the skin feeling oily.
Best of all, any excess of these ingredients can double as Mother's Day breakfast. Hehe.
RE-TEXTURISING MASK
What you'll need:
- 1 tablespoon of natural, plain yoghurt
- 1 tablespoon of honey
- 1 tablespoon of turmeric
Add all ingredients into a bowl and stir.
The great thing about this mask is that the lactic acid from the yoghurt acts like a mild exfoliator, removing the dull skin cells on the surface to expose the fresher cells underneath. The honey is a moisturiser, which your skin will need after lifting those skin cells away, and turmeric is good for counteracting pigmentation. Which is perfect for the sun worshippers amongst us.
GLOWING SKIN MASK
What you'll need:
- 1 tablespoon of cacao powder
- 1/4 of papaya
- A squeeze of Aloe Vera gel
Mash the papaya in a bowl and add the the rest of ingredients. Combine well.
Leave this mask on for 10 minutes and remove with a tissue. Run a face washer under warm water, remove excess water and apply to face to remove any excess product.
This mask is packed full of radiance boosting properties courtesy of both the aloe the papaya. The aloe makes this great for sensitive skin types as well. If you're unsure, do a little skin patch test first.
COMBATING ACNE AND BLEMISHES
What you need:
- 1 tablespoon of manuka honey
- 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder
- 1/2 teaspoon of Dead Sea Salt
Combine all 3 ingredients in a bowl. Apply with a clean foundation brush, concentrate on your t-zone, as this is where most of your oil production occurs. Spread more product onto the cheeks if you're especially oily.
Manuka honey has amazing healing properties, while turmeric is a great anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory, which is perfect for acne prone skin, or calming down a mini breakout. Leave mask on for 10-15 minutes and rinse off with warm water.
OIL CONTROL
What you need:
-1/2 an avocado
-1/4 of a cucumber (blended)
Mash avocado in a bowl and add the blended cucumber. Apply to the skin and leave on for 10-15 minutes. Remove with a warm face washer.
With the benefits of the cucumber, which is really hydrating and refreshing on the skin, and the avocado, which helps reduce inflammation, this mask will leave your face feeling fresh and cleansed.
ONE LAST THING
Before you go crazy raiding your fridge to become the new Nigella of the beauty world, there are a few things to remember.
1) ALWAYS check best before/use by dates. For obvious reasons.
2) There are certain ingredients which are really beneficial, but should not go anywhere near the skin on your face without being mixed with other ingredients first. Things with really high acidic content such as apple cider vinegar, lemons etc are examples of this. If these are applied directly to the skin you run the risk of bleaching your skin.
3) Do a patch test. Test a little of the mask on your skin to see if you react to it. If nothing happens, all good to go. If your skin goes all The Wicked Witch of the West, it's probably best to try another mask
4) Use all of the mask on the day. Discard any you don't use. If you need to, keep the remaining product in the fridge for no more than 2 days.
